In the Creep, Crawl and Wriggle project, Reception children will learn about minibeasts. They will observe minibeasts in their natural habitats and create shelters for them to live in. They will learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and explore what minibeasts, such as snails and worms, need to survive. They will compare the features of minibeasts and learn the names of their body parts.
Ideas for supporting your child at home include:
Week 1
This week we have been exploring all things to do with minibeasts! Kick starting our project with a minibeast hunt around our school. We searched in places such as under logs, in our bug house and in the mud & found all sorts of minibeast including, a ladybird, ants, a wasp & a butterfly. We have also been naming the parts of a minibeast, as well as comparing them with each other to investigate their similarities and differences & deciding if they were classed as an insect or not!
We have also read the book: 'Snail trail' & have been inspired by the artist Henri Matisse who created 'The snail' portrait, creating our very own creative versions of the artwork.
Week 2
This week we set up our own investigation to see which foods are the most popular with the minibeasts! First we predicted which one we thought they would like the best and created a class pictogram. Then we found the perfect sheltered spot and have been observing the food plate all week. We were excited to spot a ladybird and a green fly munching on the tomato! We read 'The very hungry caterpillar' to learn all about the life cycle of a butterfly, learning each of the 4 stages and understanding that it repeats over and over again.
Finally, to conclude our mini project we have been using our fine motor skills to create our favourite minibeasts using playdough, match sticks and googly eyes!
