In the Sow, Grow and Farm project, your child(ren) will learn about allotments in the United Kingdom. In Science, they will learn about food webs and animal life cycles, including how living things are dependent on one another within a habitat. They will also investigate the different ways that plants reproduce and will dissect flowering plants to identify the different structures. In Geography, they will have the opportunity to learn about farming in the United Kingdom and the techniques used in modern farming, including the challenges that farmers face. In DT, they will learn about the benefits of eating seasonally and about the pros and cons of importing food. They will also learn about world farming and how the different climate zones affect where different foods can be grown.
We have a number of companion projects that we will be completing alongside our Geography-driven main project:
Week 2
Science
This week, we have been learning about reproduction in plants. We started with asexual reproduction, looking at a range of plants. We talked about the different parts that we could see and cross-referenced with our information sheets.
We then looked at sexual reproduction, by dissecting a flowering plant. We found the filaments, anthers, ovary, ovules, style and stigma. It was interesting to see the parts for real and to talk about what happens when pollen lands on the stigma.
Week 1
Science
We have started our new project ‘Sow, Grow and Farm’ by looking at living things and their life cycles. Looking at amphibians, mammals, birds and insects, we researched different animals and used key vocabulary in our own diagrams.
