Developing design criteria and using tools safely

Design

After testing materials and creating joints last week, Class 2 began designing their greenhouses. Paying careful attention to the materials they would use and the requirements needed for a successful environment, the children worked collaboratively in groups to plan, sketch and label their designs. They then tested the equipment they would use to cut and join the materials needed.

Ask your child what different joints they created and why they are used.

Building a greenhouse

Using their newly acquired skills, Class 2 worked in small groups to build their own greenhouse. The requirements were to be a wooden frame, have a translucent cover, be able to fit a specific size tub to grow cress and use different joints when building.

Ask your child to explain how they solved any building problems they faced.
