Misty Mountain, Winding River - Spring Term

The Cornerstones project which will begin in Spring Term will be Misty Mountain, Winding River. This is a Geography driven project which will teach us about the characteristics and features of rivers and mountain ranges around the world, including a detailed exploration of the ecosystems and processes that shape them and the land around them.

All of the wonderful learning that will take place over the Spring Term will support us in being able to answer this project's Big Question: What do you know about mountains and rivers?

Subject Driver Knowledge Organiser:

In addition to our main Geography project, we will also be studying a range of companion projects throughout the Spring term.

Science

Our first Science companion project is States of Matter. This project will teach us about solids, liquids and gases and their characteristic properties. They observe how materials change state as they are heated and cooled, and learn key terminology associated with these processes.

Our second Science companion project is Grouping and Classifying. This project will teach us about grouping living things, known as classification. They study the animal and plant kingdoms and use and create classification keys to identify living things.

Art and Design

Our first Art and Design companion project Vista. This project will teach us about the techniques that artists use when composing landscape images, such as colour and atmosphere.

Our second Art and Design companion project is Animal. This project will teach us about the historical and cultural portrayal of animals in art. They study the visual qualities of animals through sketching, printmaking and clay modelling.

Design and Technology

Our Design and Technology companion project is Functional and Fancy Fabrics. This project will teach us about home furnishings and the significant designer William Morris. They learn techniques for decorating fabric, including block printing, hemming and embroidery and use them to design and make a fabric sample.

Religious Education

During the Spring Term we will be learning about two different religious celebrations. The first celebration we will explore is Vaisakhi, a Sikh celebration. The second celebration we will explore is Holy Week & Easter, a Christian celebration.

Below are the glossaries for these projects, listing the vocabulary we will be introduced to.
