The Cornerstones project which we will carry out over the Summer term will be Magnificent Monarchs. This is a History driven project here children will learn about the English and British monarchy from AD 871 to the present day. Using timelines, information about royal palaces, portraits and other historical sources, they will build up an understanding of the monarchs and then research six of the most significant sovereigns.
Alongside this driver project, we will carry out linked companion projects.
Our Science project, Animal Survival, will teaches the children about growth in animals by exploring the life cycles of some familiar animals. They will build on learning about the survival of humans by identifying the basic needs of animals for survival, including food, water, air and shelter.
Our Art project, Portraits and Poses, will teach children about portraiture. They will analyse the portraits of Tudor monarchs and compare Tudor portraits and selfies today. They will use photo editing software to create royal portraits.
There will be two Design and Technology projects that we will carry out during the summer term.
The first project will be Cut, Stitch and Join. This project will teach children about fabric home products and the significant British brand Cath Kidston. They will learn about sewing patterns and using a running stitch and embellishments before making a sewn bag tag.
The second project will be Push and Pull. This project will teach children about three types of mechanism: sliders, levers and linkages. They will make models of each mechanism before designing and making a greetings card with a moving part.
Our Religious Education learning will involve learning about two celebrations.
The first will be the Sikh celebration of Anand Karaj. We will be learning about a Sikh wedding. This will include the Kurmai engagement ceremony and events that happen during the wedding day - both at the Gurdwara and later at the reception.
The second project will be an Islamic celebration, Jumu'ah. Jumu’ah are Friday prayers. We will learn all about how many Muslims wash, put on perfume or aftershave and dress in clean clothes for Jumu'ah, then meet at the mosque to say special prayers and listen to a talk by the Imam. We will learn about how the importance of saying Friday prayers is mentioned in the Qur’an and Muhammad called Friday the best day.
