The Cornerstones project which will begin this new academic term will be Childhood. This is a History driven project where we will have great fun learning about everyday life and families today, including comparisons with childhood in the 1950s, using artefacts and a range of different sources.

Science

The first Science project will be Everyday Materials. This project will teach us about what objects are made from materials. We will identify a range of everyday materials and their sources. We will investigate the properties of materials and begin to recognise that a material's properties define its use. During the second term we will move onto learning about Human Senses. This project teaches us that humans are a type of animal known as a mammal. We will name and count body parts and identify similarities and differences. We will learn about the senses, the body parts associated with each sense and their role in keeping us safe.

Geography

Our project will be Our Wonderful World. This essential skills and knowledge project will teach us about physical and human features, maps, cardinal compass points, and positional and directional language. We will learn about the equator, hemispheres and continents and are introduced to the countries, capital cities and settlements of the United Kingdom. We will carry out simple fieldwork to find out about local physical and human features.

Art and Design

In Art and Design, we will be studying two projects. The first will be Mixing Colours. This project will teach us about basic colour theory by studying the colour wheel and colour mixing. It will include an exploration of primary and secondary colours and how artists use colour in their artwork. Our second project will be Funny Faces and Fabulous Features. This project will tech us the concept of the portrait and how the collage technique can be used to make a portrait.

Design and Technology

During the project Shade and Shelter, we will learn about the purpose of shelters and their materials. We will name and describe shelters and design and make shelter prototypes. We will then design and build a play den as a group and evaluate our completed product.

Religious Education

During our project, we will be learning about the Christian celenration of Harvest. We will learn how Harvest festivals are not fixed in the church calendar. However, many churches and schools in the UK celebrate harvest in September or October. At harvest time, we will learn that Christians may sing special hymns, display a range of foods and flowers in church, collect food and household items for local good causes or give money to charities at home or overseas.

We will also explore that different harvest festivals happen all over the world and most major religions give thanks for the harvest at some point in the year. We will learn about how the timing of harvest celebrations change depending on the different seasons and crops grown in each country.
