We looked at a still from 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', when the children arrive at Hogwarts for the first time. In the photo, we could see mountains, a lake, a cliff and the train station. The surrounding area was very bare, so we knew it wasn't close to any towns or cities; the book also tells us it's a seven or eight hour train ride from King's Cross in London!
Using all of this information, we used the atlases to locate areas which matched all of the criteria. We shared our initial ideas and are going to come to a final decision early next week!
Having watched a summary of the first film, we built up some word banks using thesauruses and dictionaries to describe the main characters. We are going to be doing lots of writing over the coming weeks, so these words will come in very handy!
I'm so impressed with the vocabulary that Class 3 came up with - there was no stopping them! Watch this space to see the quality of their writing...
