Summer Term - Blast Off!

This term all of our learning is going to be inspired by Space! The children were all extremely excited to transform our classroom into a galactic learning zone! We are going to to learning all about the planets, the history of space travel and much much more!

Keep looking at our regular website updates to see where our magical learning journey has taken us this term!  Here's a sneak peek at where our learning journey is going to take us throughout the project.

Week 1

So far this week the children have been extremely excited to begin learning all about the new project, Blast off!

We began the week by making our very own space passports to prepare for the journeys through space.

In literacy, the children have been producing some wonderful descriptive writing using their senses to describe what it would be like to land in space. As the week went on, the children were thinking of all sorts of questions they wanted to know about space, so we decided to write some letters to Nasa to see if they could answers some of the children’s questions.

In maths, the children have been recapping their knowledge of multiplication and apply this knowledge to solve some reasoning problems.

The children have also spent time learning about our Solar system, all the planets in it and why the sun is so important to Earth.

Wow! What an extremely busy week we have had in class one!

Busy working together in literacy to describe what it might be like in space.

Week 2

This week the children have been learning all about non-chronological reports. The children spent time working in small groups to identify key features on non-chronological reports and then shared this with the rest of the class. The children then began to plan and write their own non-chronological reports all about space including many of the key features they have discovered.

In maths, we have been recapping methods of division and representing division number facts using bar modelling. The children then went on to use their knowledge of division and bar modelling to solve some reasoning problems.

This week the children have spent time learning all about stars and the different stages of a stars life cycle. Also, in science the children have been thinking scientifically and worked in groups to plan an experiment where they would prove that plants need water and light to grow.

Week 3

So far this week the children have been learning all about newspaper reports and in history, the children learnt all about the first man on the moon.

The children were very excited to learn all about Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. The children used all this information to write their very own newspaper report all about the first man on the moon.

In maths, the children have been recapping their knowledge of fractions and have been applying this knowledge to solve some tricky problems.

Week 4

This week the children have been learning all about Tim Peake. They were excited to learn that Tim Peake was the first British astronaut to travel to space in 20 years! The children used all the facts they learnt about Tim Peake to write a diary entry as if they were Tim Peake in space.

In maths, the children have been recapping their knowledge of addition and subtraction and applying this knowledge to solve some missing number problems.

In topic, the children have been exploring mechanisms to create their own moving space pictures. Some of the children created moving rockets and the other children created moving astronauts bouncing up and down on the moon.

Week 5

This week the children have been working hard in to design and make the their very own aliens. The children thought carefully about what their aliens will look like and the different colours they might use. The children then produced some wonderful descriptive writing about their aliens, working hard to include lots of adjectives and conjunctions to make their sentences interesting.

The children then used their aliens as inspirations to write their very own versions of The tiger who came to tea story. The children’s stories were called The alien who came to tea. The children had to think carefully about what type of personality their alien would have and if he would be well mannered or not when he came for tea. The stories were brilliant and the children enjoyed reading them aloud to one another.

In maths, the children have been learning all about capacity and volume. The children have spent time reading scales and learning to measure volume carefully using ml and litres. The children then applied this knowledge to follow some recipes to make a variety of yummy alien soups!

This week the children have also spent time getting creative to produce their very own space themed paintings. The children applied their knowledge of colour mixing to mix a variety of colours to represent the planets in our solar system.

Week 7

So far this week the children have been working hard to recap their knowledge of recounts. The children have then been working hard to write their very own fictional recount about a journey to space. The children included lots of wonderful descriptions about what they could see in space, using adjectives and conjunctions to extend their sentences.

In maths, the children have had lots of fun collect data. The children were trying to find out class one’s favourite planet. The children have spent time recording their data in tally charts and pictograms.

We have also had some visitors in school this week and the children have spent two days learning all about road safety and the Green Cross Code. The children very excited to have the opportunity to sit in a huge lorry!

At the beginning of the week, the children represented the school wonderfully when competing in this year’s sports day.

WOW! What an incredibly busy first week back!
