Summer term - A Din in the Deep!

This term our topic is called A Din in the Deep! This is going to be a shared topic with foundation class and is going to be all about life at sea. 

Week one WC 12.04.16

WOW! We’ve had a fantastic start to the week!

In literacy we have been busy learning all about the author Ringo Starr and one of his books the Octopus’s garden. We have been learning all about the key features of a book review and have begun to write our very own book review.

In maths we’ve been polishing up on our addition and subtraction skills and have been using this knowledge to solve inverse operation problems.

In topic we have been learning all about the world and its seven continents and its five major oceans. We have also spent time decorating our sketchbook ready to put all of our observational drawings in that we are going to complete over this term.

Week two WC 18.04.16

In literacy we have continued to look at the story the octopus’s garden by Ringo Starr, we have investigated descriptive writing and have worked hard to plan our own under the sea adventure story. We have also been working on our own descriptive writing to describe the setting of our story.

In maths we have been working on multiplication and division. Some of the children have been using cubes and chalk to create arrays. Others have been drawing their own arrays in their books. There really are some budding mathematicians in class one!

In topic we have been learning all about the famous 1960’s pop band ‘The Beatles’. The children have shown great enthusiasm for learning about the Beatles and have even compared them to ‘One Direction’! We have discussed them members of the band and have spent time listening to their songs and singing along in the classroom J

In science this week we have begun learning all about different animals groups such as, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects and fish. We began discussing how different animals have their young and the children were very excited to have a special visit from Isaac’s chicks as we have learnt that birds lay eggs and do not have live young like mammals!  

 

We have been learning all about The Beatles and have created a timeline all about them.

We had visitors this week!

Week three WC 25.04.16

In literacy we have continued to look at the story the octopus’s garden by Ringo Starr. The children have been working hard to put the finishing touches in their stories, including using different sentence types.

In maths we have continued to work on multiplication and division. This week class one has been invaded by mermaids and pirates sharing out their gold and treasure!

In topic we have been learning all about animals and their habitats. We have also been learning about different climates around the world and how we can find hot and cold countries using a map.

We have also begun to learn about artist Claude Monet and his seascape paintings. We have been developing our drawing skills and produced some observational drawings of shells.

Week 4  WC  3.05.16

 

In literacy this week we have begun to look at the story The Rainbow Fish. Some of the children have been exploring how the characters feel in the story and have taken part in some role play. Some children have been completed some comprehension activities all about the story and facts about rainbow fish.  

In maths we have been busy recapping lots of skills. We have been problems solving, finding fractions of amounts and weighing objects! We have been extremely busy!

The children were very excited this week to learn a new technique in art when we began to learn how to create polystyrene prints. The children worked hard to transfer their images of fish onto their polystyrene printing block and then began to create some of their very own prints. They really do look fantastic! 

 

We have been working hard to create some wonderful under the sea prints!

Week 5   WC 9.5.16

WOW what a busy week! In literacy we have been learning all about writing an explanation text. The children have been working really hard to be able to spot the difference between explaining and giving instructions! They have all been extremely resilient as this is very tricky to understand and they have all written their very own explanation text about ‘How polystyrene printing works’. Some of the children even used their knowledge of explaining to explain to the reception children how to make a polystyrene print!

The children were also extremely to teach their grownups how to make polystyrene prints during a stay and play session this week!

In maths the children have been recapping everything they know about measuring. We have been measuring lots of different things including, weight, length, height and capacity.

We have also been getting creative in art and have been learning all about mixing different colours. The children have worked on mixing light colours and dark colours. They then used this knowledge to create some wonderful sea scape paintings using water colours.

Week six WC 16.05.16

 

In literacy this week we have been watching ‘finding Nemo’ as part of visual literacy. We have talked all about what it is like to be lost and how this makes us feel. This was all in preparation to write our very own fictional recount about being lost under the sea!

We have been working on writing numbers in words in maths and learning about doubling and halving.

In topic we have been busy completing lots of art activities in preparation for our WOW event next week! We have even created some wonderful clay models of under the sea creatures!

We have been learning all about the artist Ben Nicholson and we have created some abstract sea shells inspired by his work.

Week seven WC 23.05.16

 

WOW! What a busy week we have had. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the children in class one on their efforts in sports day! They all did a fantastic job and showed great relationships cheering for one another and giving positive encouragement. So well done everyone!

We have spent the rest of the week getting prepared for our WOW event on Friday so we have been getting extremely creative! We have made some collaborative under the sea sculptures, create some sand and sea paintings and lots more.  

Make sure you attend our art gallery on Friday afternoon to see all of our lovely creations. 

Week eight WC 6.6.16

WOW! What a super start to the week! We have been extremely busy this week. In literacy we have been learning all about non-chronological reports and the key features of a non-chronological report. We learnt that when writing a non-chronological report it is important to use facts. So we have been busy researching lots of facts about sea turtles ready to write our very own information leaflets.

In topic we have been busy learning about the life cycle of a sea turtle. We have also been investigating moving pictures and even made our very own under the sea moving pictures using a slider mechanism.

In maths we have been revisiting our understanding of place values and how we can make numbers using lots of different combinations.

Week nine

In literacy we have been reading the extended story ‘The Ghost of Grania O’Malley’ by Micheal Morpurgo. The children are really enjoying the story and have been on the edge of the seats wondering what might happen next. We have used this story as inspiration to write our very own mysterious stories.

In maths we have been recapping the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We have even been experimenting making our own models of 2D and 3D shapes using pipe cleaners, play dough and straws! We also investigated why bubbles are always sphere shaped and if there was any way we could make different shaped bubbles.

In topic we have begun to learn all about famous pirates. The children have shown lots of enthusiasm when learning about the fearsome pirate Blackbeard!

Week ten

In literacy we have continued to read the extended story ‘The Ghost of Grania O’Malley’ by Micheal Morpurgo.

We have also been learning about rhyming and pattern. We have looked at lots of silly pirate poems and we have generated our own pirate themed rhyming couplets.  

In maths we have been learning all about position and direction. We have given each other clear directions and learnt the importance of begin accurate with our instructions. We then created our very own pirate treasure maps!

In topic we have continued to learn all about famous pirates. We learnt about what happens when the pirates are marooned on a desert island! We pretended we had been marooned on a desert island and wrote our very own message in a bottle in the hope we would get rescued!

We have also been learning all about the human body and what different body parts are for.
