We have made instructional videos for how to do Column Addition and Subtraction in years 3 and 4 today.
Today we worked in groups to act out the Iron Man escaping from the trap. We then worked together to predict what might happen next and act that out too.
This week we have continued looking at the capture of the Iron Man but we have moved on from the Comic Strips to looking at writing from a different perspective. We planned and wrote the capture of the Iron Man from the Iron Man's perspective. It was really tricky because we had to imagine that we were the Iron Man and had to write about the events as if we were seeing them through the eyes of the Iron Man. We also had to think about how the Iron Man would feel at each part and what made him to decide to do each of the things that he did.
Over the last few Art lessons we have been using different grade of pencils to sketch. We started by experimenting with the pencils to find out what each pencil looked like when it was used to shade.
We then used our new knowledge and skills to sketch the Iron Man's face. It was tricky to get the texture and features of the face right using the shading techniques.
Today in Literacy, we started to create our Comic strips for the capture of the Iron Man. To do this we used our plans from yesterday, what we could remember from the book and all of the features of Comic strips that we identified before.
We finished out Comic Strips and they look fab. We remembered the features and made sure that they were clear and in chronological order.
Today we created a piece of drama, in groups. We used the part of the story where the farmers try (and eventually succeed) to trap the Iron Man.
This week in Literacy we have been looking at writing from different perspectives. We have been thinking about what different people would think, feel and see about the same event.
The event that we have been looking at is the discovery of the Iron Man. We have looked at how Hogarth, his Farther, the Iron Man himself and even how the fish would have felt during the discovery of the Iron Man. We have been working towards writing a diary entry by discovering the features of a diary and the structure.
We then put all of our learning and knowledge together to write a diary entry of discovering the Iron Man as either the Iron Man himself, Hogarth, Hogaths' Dad or a fish!
This week in DT we continued building our Iron men using our plans and making sure that we were continuing to build to the brief.
This week in Literacy, we have been debating whether the local people should trap the Iron Man or not.
We focused on the features of a debate before going on to create our own. We were put into groups to be the different characters from the book. We then had to use the book to find out if our character would want the Iron Man to be trapped or not and the reasons why.
We then put all of the reasons we could find and think of into a debate to try and convince people that our idea was the right thing to do.
This term (Summer Term 1) in PE we are focusing on Athletics ready for our Sports Day at the beginning of next term.
So far we have been practicing track events including sprinting, long distance running and relay races.
Today we started our DT work for the Iron Man. We were given a design brief that we had to stick to and we started planning how we are going to create our own Iron Men.
The design brief.
The Iron Man has to;
- stand up by its self
- have at least 2 moving body parts
- not be taller than Mr Lee.
Once we have designed our Iron Men we will be making them in our groups ready for the grand reveal at our WOW Event later this term!
This week we are looking at 'The Coming of the Iron Man' Poem by Brenda Williams. So far we have drawn a picture of the Iron Man and labelled it with quotes from the poem to describe the Iron Man.
We then used the poem to find lots of different features within it. We looked at rhyming couplets, similes, questions and repetition.
We then went onto plan our own poems all about the Iron Man's head. We had to use some of the features that we had identified, including rhyming couplets.
It was a little bit tricky but the finished poems were great!
Today we started our Settlements part if Geography.
We started by finding the definition of a settlement and talking about different settlements.
We then went on to make a diamond 9 of what we thought we needed to look for to have a successful settlement.
Once we had decided on this we went to the island at the back of school to decide where we thought would be the best place to settle. The island had beaches, sea, mountains, forests and a river running from the mountains to the sea.
It was really interesting to see where everyone chose to create their settlements and their reasons why.
I wonder if our locations will change after we have learnt more about settlements this term?
Look at the pictures of our afternoon below.
Today in Art we created silhouette pictures of the Iron Man. Don't they look brilliant!
Today in Literacy we were answering inference and prediction questions using just the front cover of The Iron Man book.
The Iron Man is a brilliant book written by Ted Hughes. During our topic we will be reading the book and watching the DVD The Iron Giant. We will be doing lots of work surrounding the book and DVD. An outline of this can be seen at the top of this page.
