As a class we had a big discussion about what the children would like to learn about in the spring term. As you can see the children had many great ideas. Mrs Smart and I then used all of these fantastic ideas to decide what the next projects learning would like like.
WOW! What a fantastic start to the new term!
This week the children have been busy learning all about the United Kingdom and its countries.
The children have worked so hard and can now name all of the countries in the United Kingdom and recognise all of their flags!
In maths the children have been working hard on finding more or less than a number.
Overall it has been a great start to the new term!
Week 2 WC 11.01.16
This week the children have been busy working really hard learning all about the plague.
In literacy the children have been learning all about the nursery rhyme ring a ring a roses and how this relates to the plague. The children have been working hard to recognise words that rhyme and use these words to create rhyming couplets.
In maths we have busy learning all about money and its different values. We have been using the class shop to add up different amounts and even work out how much change is required!
We have been getting extremely creative this week in topic as we have designed and began to make our very own Tudor house!
This week the children have been learning all about the great fire of London. In literacy we have been learning all about the key features of a newspaper article. We even had a visit from some of the children in class one who talked to us about the great fire of London and showed us some newspaper reports they had written.
In maths we have been working on understanding fractions. The children gave been finding fractions of shapes and fraction if different amounts!
The children were really keen to get their Tudor houses finished this week and they were very excited to experiment with tissue paper to create their very own burning Tudor houses, just like the houses during the great fire!
Week 4 25.01.16
This week the children have been working extremely hard to get their newspaper articles finished! We have had some fantastic reporters in the classroom and most children have even included a quote into their newspaper report!
In topic we have been using cardinal directions to plan our very own fire escape from the building and we even programmed a ‘beebot’ to follow our directions! We have also learnt all about abstract art this week and created our very own abstract paintings of the great fire of London!
In maths the children have continued to work on fractions and began to apply this knowledge to finding fractions of lengths! Some children have been working on recognising equivalent fractions too!
Week 5 WC 01.02.16
This week the children have been working extremely hard! In topic we have been busy following instructions to bake bread! The children really enjoyed learning how to knead the dough and worked really well together in their groups.
In literacy we have been learning all about writing instruction and the key features of instructions. The children have all produced some fantastic instructions about how to make bread. They have even all included imperative verbs!
The children have really blown my socks off this week with how quickly they have mastered telling the time! All of the children can now tell the time to the nearest half an hour. Lots of children have taken on the challenge of recognising quarter to and quarter past times and some children have even managed to recognise times at 5 minute intervals!

This week the children have continued to learn about the great fire of London. They have been so enthusiastic this term about learning about the great fire of London that we decided to continue this until the end of the term!
In literacy the children have produce some fantastic descriptive writing. They imagined they were in the great fire of London and used all of their senses to describe their experience of the great disaster!
The children have been applying their knowledge of telling the time to problem solve in maths.
It’s been all hands on deck to continue the final preparations for the class one WOW event on Friday afternoon. The children have all produced designs for the ‘Bake off’ and are all extremely excited to take part!
Week 7 WC 22.02.16
This week in maths we have been developing methods of addition. some of the children have been using number lines to help them solve addition number investigations. Meanwhile, other children have been drawing blank number lines and using partitioning. We really have been developing different methods this week!
In literacy we have been busy reading the story 'Friend or Foe' by Micheal Morpurgo. The children have predicted what they think the story is about and they have even taken part in their very own evacuee morning, where they imagined they were evacuees and described how they would be feeling.
In topic this week we have continued to learn all about the Blitz! We have been busy writing facts about the causes of the Blitz and what this meant for people living during the 1940's. We have discussed how the war affected the children living in those days and we have even began creating our very own gas masks!!!!!
Overall we have had an extremely busy week!
Week 8 WC 29.02.16
This week the children have been busy working hard to write a story about an evacuee. The children have been editing and improving their story openers to ensure that they really keep the readers on edge!
In maths the children have been developing their methods of subtraction. The children have used their knowledge of inverse operations to solve missing number problems.
In topic the children worked hard to add the finishing touches to their gas masks. Also we have been learning all about plants in science and have even set up our very our experiment to observe how plants grow when they are placed in different areas, have restricted or no light and are given no water.
As part of their homework project the children have been talking to their family and friends about the war. They have also collected any war time memorabilia that family or friend had at home. The children spent time talking about what they had discovered about the war with their family or friends during a class discussion.
The children asked some fantastic questions and showed great speaking and listening skills.
Week 9 WC 7.03.16
So far this week the children have been working really hard to complete their evacuee story. They have been working on editing and improving their sentences. They’ve been looking for their own spelling errors and using dictionaries to find the correct spellings. We really do have some reflective learners in class one which is great to see!
In maths we are beginning to learn about 2D and 3D shapes. The children have been looking at the properties of shapes and investigating lines of symmetry.
Week 10 WC 14.03.16
This week we have had a very exciting week as the children have been looking forward to their visit to the Lincolnshire life museum.
In literacy the children have been learning all about writing a recount. They have learnt about the key features they need to include and have begun to plan their own recount ready to write their own about our trip to the Lincolnshire life museum.
In maths the children have continued to learn about the properties of shapes and the differences between 2D and 3D shapes.
The children have had great fun programming the bee-bots in order to make them follow a set of instructions.
We have also been developing our painting skills in order to produce paintings in the style of Jackson Pollock!
